This spreadsheet projects unit sales, installed base, and revenues for consumer wearable devices through 2020. The forecasts include breakdowns by device type (activity trackers, multipurpose devices, or fashion-driven items), smartness index, and region. NOTE: This is an update of the February 2015 version of the forecast.

  • Ovum expects wearable device sales to reach 438 million units by 2020. Revenues generated from direct sale of wearable devices to consumers will reach $28.9bn in 2020, up from $3.4bn in 2014.
  • The market is currently dominated by activity trackers, which represented 80% of the installed base at the end of 2014. This is set to change, however, with multipurpose devices and fashion items together making up almost 60% of the installed base in 2020.
  • Multipurpose devices, including smart watches and smart glasses, offer additional software revenue opportunities via a dedicated app ecosystem that could serve up to 210 million installed devices by the end of 2020.
