How consumers communicate has undergone a seismic shift over the past five years, and this shift will continue to impact the wider telecoms industry to 2021, driving change in CSPs' traffic and revenue mix, and service development and provisioning.


  • Given their network coverage and subscriber bases, CSPs are well positioned to participate in any adjacent market that requires connectivity, providing they are willing to diversify into new segments and new business models.
  • Mobile subscriptions will far exceed fixed subscriptions by 2021. Fixed–mobile substitution will continue to take hold in developed markets while emerging markets go mobile-first. Growth will be highest in Africa and parts of Asia. M2M/IoT will also drive growth in mobile subscriptions, as smart devices proliferate in multiple segments.
  • Globally, CSP fixed and mobile voice revenues are in decline. Call revenues are dropping as consumers adopt OTT VoIP and as CSPs respond by restructuring their tariffs to include unlimited voice minute packages.
