Introduction

Verizon is the leading US wireless operator by subscriptions. The company operates solely in the US and competes on a platform of “pay a premium for quality” with its pricing, but this strategy is being challenged by price competition in the market.

Highlights

  • Verizon is acquiring AOL, which gives it an ad platform that will be used in launching the company’s mobile OTT video service this year. Verizon also launched slimmed-down TV bundles, called FiOS Custom TV. More personalization and lower price points can prove attractive, especially to younger users, who are more likely to cut the cord on traditional TV service.
  • Verizon won substantial AWS-3 spectrum licenses in the recent auction. Now it has at least 60MHz of AWS spectrum, covering 84% of the US population, compared with 55% before the auction.
  • Verizon is selectively migrating copper customers with a higher volume of calls to customer service to fiber, to improve customer satisfaction and cut costs. It also gives Verizon the opportunity to upsell users other FiOS products.
