Syncsort, no stranger to handling mainframe data, has just acquired Cogito, a niche, UK-based firm, for its expertise with the internals of legacy databases IDMS and DB2 on z/OS, for bulking up its Hadoop integration tooling.

  • Integrating mainframe data to Hadoop is easier said than done. Unlike more modern SQL relational databases, mainframes are far more opaque. For starters, unlike SQL with ODBC, there isn't a standard that provides a consensus target for writing extraction programs.

Features and Benefits

  • Compares Syncsort's Hadoop-mainframe data integration strategy to rivals such as IBM, Informatica, and Veristorm.
  • Discusses the database targets (IBM's DB2 on z/OS and CA Technologies' IDMS) that drove acquisition of Cogito.

Key questions answered

  • Why did Syncsort buy Cogito?
  • Why is mainframe data integration more difficult than with SQL databases for feeding data to Hadoop?
