The CEO of OffsiteDataSync, Matthew Chesterton, invited a group of press/analyst to tour its co-location facility in Las Vegas Nevada to demonstrate the measures it takes to secure and protect its customers’ data. The SUPERNAP data center in Las Vegas is one of five tier-4 gold-standard data centers globally, and the only commercially available co-location facility of its kind.

What makes SUPERNAP so special?

The location of any data center is selected with care, making sure there is sufficient power, excellent network connectivity, whether it is prone to natural disasters, and there are sufficient funds to operate it. Switch, the parent company of SUPERNAP, selected the site in Las Vegas precisely because of these four main considerations.

First, Las Vegas is located close to the Hoover Dam that can supply sufficient power for its growing needs (Las Vegas was designed to support many more people than currently live in the city). Second, Enron had all the major carriers install fiber-optic network connection to its broadband arbitrage data center in Las Vegas just before the company’s collapse in 2001. Switch purchased the site in 2002 because of its country-wide connectivity. Third, Las Vegas, unlike the recent film “San Andreas” suggests, is not on any major fault-lines and does not suffer from other significant natural disasters. Finally, Nevada is just outside California, which is known for its high energy prices and high taxes, unlike Nevada that has low taxation and energy costs.

However, these aspects alone do not make SUPERNAP the secure facility it is. The tour illuminated a number of other critical capabilities that SUPERNAP provides for customers. One of the most impressive is the ability to support rack densities of 42Kw per rack, as a result of its use of contained hot aisles and the fact it uses overhead utilities supply, so the floor is solid concrete that can support the weight of fully loaded racks. The cooling fans also have inertial wheels fitted, so during any loss of power (something that has never happened at the SUPERNAP facility), the fans would continue to rotate while power is restored. The physical security measures, of which there are too many to list, are another impressive display of how serious SUPERNAP takes customer security.
