On June 25, 2018, Huawei announced the availability of its oDSP (optical DSP). Huawei’s oDSP program includes both a high-performance version maximizing spectral-efficiency system reach and a power-space optimized design. Huawei is also introducing AI neuron and channel-matched shaping (CMS) technologies to boost wavelength performance.

Channel-matched shaping and AI neuron are aimed at improving real-world wavelength performance

Optical networks endure many types of real-world variations and impairments that lead to variable transmission performance. Temperatures change, fiber physical integrity is compromised, noise and dispersion vary over time, and polarization change can be induced by external environmental factors, all of which impact performance. With the oDSP, CMS, and AI, constant, time-based measurement is enabled, facilitating real-time control for optimal performance.

The oDSP was “Day 1” designed with telemetry and advanced algorithmic control in mind. AI neuron is a distributed capability with an AI neuron functional module embedded in the oDSP for real-time optical parameter capture. Optical parameters collected include OSNR, dispersion, polarization state and change, link margin, and more. AI neuron tracks performance parameters across the entire network for end-to-end wavelength visibility. Optimization algorithms within AI neuron can detect early indicators of potential performance degradation scenarios, initiating preemptive actions.

CMS, the central oDSP algorithm calls on constellation shaping to compensate for noise penalties, spectrum shaping to minimize channel bandwidth penalties, and dynamic distortion shaping to mitigate for dynamic interference effects. The net result is that CMS can react to deleterious effects in channel condition brought on by component deterioration, fiber stress, or non-linear effects and, via algorithmic intelligence and policy, retune transmission for optimal performance.

Coherent optical chipsets are the key differentiator in optical transmission. The industry is pursuing two models: system vendors with vertically integrated DSP solutions and merchant market supplied coherent DSPs. Merchant market proponents claim superior volumes will enable a lower cost structure. Huawei’s R&D commitment to the oDSP program is a major vote for the continued expansion of the vertically integrated model.
