Summary

With more than 80% fiber-to-the-home/building (FTTH/B) penetration in China, its university professors, staff, and students expect fiber-like speeds throughout higher education campuses. Huawei, the worldwide market share leader in FTTx PON equipment, is leading the adoption of passive optical LAN (POL) among China's universities, bringing fiber to classrooms, labs, administration offices, and dormitories.

FTTH increases expectations for the university campus

Ovum had the opportunity to discuss the adoption of POL in China's universities during Huawei’s Analyst Summit in April 2018 in Shenzhen. Although POL is not a new concept, its adoption is gaining momentum among universities, hotels, enterprises, airports, and shopping centers in China. Huawei is well positioned to capture these opportunities, given its leadership in the PON equipment shipment market and its enterprise information and communications technology teams.

POL adoption is gaining momentum among China's universities for several reasons. First, most university IT and communications facility directors use fiber-based broadband communications in their homes. PON-based high-speed broadband is becoming ubiquitous, with more than 80% household penetration and continued network expansion by all three major operators. Second, China's households are early adopters of 4K TVs, providing them with high-quality on-demand content. China's households have come to expect high-quality 4K content experiences.

Huawei is not alone in its ability to deliver POL to universities in China, but its strong position in PON technology and equipment is important. In addition, Huawei is a major player in cloud-based technologies and services. Cloud usage saves universities both capital expenditures and operating costs while supporting the faster rollout of new services and applications for professors, students, and IT network support staff.

Stay tuned for Ovum's upcoming report Supporting the Future of Higher Education with Fiber Connectivity, which will examine the advantages of POL compared to traditional LANs, with case studies.
