Verizon has announced a successful trial of 400GbE, the deployment of new high-capacity circuit emulation technology, and the deployment of a software-defined networking (SDN) application/multi-layer controller to create visibility and automation around the optical network and the router network. These key technologies provide the infrastructure for 5G and a more flexible enterprise network while lowering the cost per bit.

Next-generation technology is network-ready

In 2017, Verizon started upgrading the network with next-generation reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexers (ROADMs) using a connectionless, directionless, and colorless (CDC) technology that provides flexible transport of wavelength across a network. It is now moving to the next phase of its network architecture evolution, which covers automation, improved visibility, high bandwidth capacity, and migration of legacy services.

Verizon has announced its successful field trial of 400GbE transport in the Dallas Metro network. The trial occurred between two Juniper PTX5000 and two Ciena 6500 WDM systems, including interconnection of IEEE 802.3bs-compliant 400GbE and transport of a 400Gb wavelength using Ciena's WaveLogic Ai. 400GbE connections will be one tool used by carriers to carry the bandwidth required from future 5G applications.

In January 2018, Sedona announced Verizon's deployment of Netfusion for automating and gaining greater visibility of the optical and packet network connectivity as part of Verizon's overall SDN strategy. Verizon initially used Netfusion to collect existing connectivity between the optical and router domains to facilitate network analytics and automation. This lays the groundwork for automating transport services and modernizing legacy private line services.

Verizon and Cisco have partnered for a circuit emulation packet transport solution that allows more efficient delivery of private line services over an MPLS network. Cisco's solution allows Verizon to modernize its legacy transport with an agile platform that uses less power in a smaller footprint than legacy systems. The modernization allows Verizon to recapture floor space that can address the low-latency requirements of cloud and 5G applications.

By adopting these software and technology solutions, Verizon is laying the foundations of next-generation applications.
