An update on the Spain telecoms market, covering mobile, fixed broadband, TV, OTT video, operator initiatives, M&A, and regulation. It includes subscription, revenue, and technology forecasts for these services.

  • The Spanish telecoms market is one of the largest in Europe, with intense competition in the mobile and fixed sectors. The mobile subscription count is forecast to grow around 4% between end-2019 and end-2024, while that of fixed broadband is forecast to grow 16%, and that of pay TV 13%.
  • All the major operators have launched low-cost convergent subbrands in the last two years to compete with fourth convergent operator Másmóvil and MVNOs. Vodafone launched Lowi, Orange launched Amena, and Telefónica launched O2 in addition to the existing low-cost convergent brand Tuenti.
  • Mobile service revenue fell slightly (1.5%) in 2018 because of price pressure and is expected to achieve around 1% growth from 2019. On the fixed side, broadband revenue is expected to grow by 4% year on year in 2020, driven by fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) and multiplay services.
