This is an update on the Spain telecoms market, covering mobile, fixed broadband, TV and OTT video, operator initiatives, M&A, and regulation. It includes subscription, revenue, and technology forecasts for these services.

  • The Spanish telecoms market is one of the largest in Europe, with intense competition in the mobile and fixed sectors. Consolidation has helped operators retain or grow market share in both the fixed and mobile segments.
  • M&A activity continued after the major acquisitions, Vodafone–Ono and Orange–Jazztel, were completed. The regional broadband operator and MVNO Euskaltel acquired R and Telecable to create a large group in northern Spain. Masmovil acquired MVNOs Happy Movil, Pepephone, Llamaya, and the MNO Yoigo.
  • In the fixed broadband segment, FTTX is expected to remain the dominant technology over the five-year forecast period. In addition to operators' investment, the government plans to invest €525m to cover 100% of the population with a fiber speed of at least 300Mbps by 2021.
