CSPs worldwide – including cable companies – are continuing wireline access network upgrades aided by the evolution of technologies such as G.Fast, DOCSIS 3.1 and next-generation PON along with SDN, NFV and remote provisioning of CPEs.

However, CSPs face numerous challenges throughout the planning, implementation and management stages of such upgrades. For example, wireline access technology choices have multiplied while customer expectations for faster speed tiers, instantly-available new service offerings and QoE are higher than ever before.

Ovum conducted a global survey among 50 major Tier-1 CSPs to identify their key challenges while transforming their wireline access networks, how they expect those challenges to change over time and their use of assistance throughout the transformation process. CSPs view QoE/QoS as the top competitive differentiator but choosing the right technology strategy to meet that competitive advantage is their highest-rated challenge.

Most CSPs plan to increase usage of partners to assist with network transformation, implementation, operations and optimization along with QoE and customer service.
