Introduction

While RPA is a natural evolution of previous-generation software tools used for business process automation (including its relationship to the discipline of “business process management”), its limitations beyond structured processes cannot be ignored. Business and IT leaders should therefore develop a rational view of RPA and identify areas where it could be applied to achieve better process efficiency, cost savings, and other strategic objectives.

Highlights

  • In simpler terms, RPA software can be considered as a toolkit that enables rapid configuration of software robots for automation of rules-driven structured processes.
  • The process-automation aspect of RPA can be thought of as presentation-layer automation software mimicking the steps of a rules-driven structured process to perform “prescribed” functions in a scalable manner.
  • While BPMS is a strategic solution to broader process management and automation initiatives, RPA software is simply a tactical approach to automation of structured processes.

Features and Benefits

  • Understand what RPA software brings to the table in terms of automation of structured processes.
  • Develop a rational view of RPA and its limitations when compared to BPM suites applied to semi-structured and unstructured processes.

Key questions answered

  • What are the various advantages and limitations of RPA software when used as a tactical process automation tool?
  • What is the difference between RPA software and BPM suites in terms of applicability to structured, semi-structured, and unstructured processes?
