Introduction

On July 24, 2019, the EC published an external study assessing technological and other market developments that could impact competition in wholesale and/or retail roaming markets over the medium term. The also study suggested that, in the more immediate term, it may be helpful to review whether there is a need for more explicit rules governing access requests for permanent roaming for connectivity in M2M/IoT services.

Highlights

  • The most common approach has been to allow the sector to continue to develop and let operators come to commercial roaming arrangements without any restrictions.

Features and Benefits

  • Assesses which countries have prohibited permanent roaming for IoT devices.
  • Evaluates the relevance to IoT devices of existing international roaming regulation for person-to-person communication.

Key questions answered

  • How are operators responding to the lack of clarity around permanent roaming regulation for IoT devices?
