Highlights

  • With a highly developed mobile sector, Qatar has the highest mobile penetration after Kuwait in the Middle Eastern region, with 4.2 million subscriptions at end-3Q18. However, due to a changing population mix, deactivated SIM cards, and cancellation of SIMs for noncompliance with the registration process, overall mobile penetration declined by 16% from end-3Q17.
  • FTTx was the leading fixed broadband technology with a market share of 98.0% in 3Q18. Despite the prevalence of free-to-air satellite signals, the pay-TV sector in Qatar is strong. It will reach 71% household penetration by the end of 2023, primarily through an expansion of IPTV services, boosted by improving infrastructure and faster broadband services.
  • Ooredoo and Vodafone are both committed to developing fiber, and competition for subscribers will be intense between the two, which should see some highly attractive bundles entering the market.
