This is an update of Pakistan's telecoms market, covering fixed broadband and mobile market trends and regulation. It includes service provider performance, multiplay services and bundling, MVNOs, and a TV/video market outlook.

  • Pakistan has emerged as a key mobile market in the central and southern Asia region. Mobile subscriptions increased 14% YoY between 2016–17, reaching 141 million at end-2017. Mobile subscription count is forecast to grow 16.1% between end-2017 and end-2022, while that of fixed broadband and pay-TV is forecast to grow 27.7% and 16.0%, respectively.
  • Low penetration of fixed broadband in the country indicates strong growth potential in the segment. Double digit growth is expected in fixed broadband connections between 2017-22 by Ovum. The incumbent operator, PTCL, released its Network Transformation Project (NTP), aimed at transforming up to 100 major exchanges out of total 427 PTCL exchanges across the country.
