Ovum view

Ovum has recently completed its latest IoT Enterprise Insight Survey. The survey covers 1,759 organizations across 15 different countries that are already deploying or contracted to deploy IoT projects. The survey offers deep insight into how organizations across eight different industry verticals are using IoT solutions, covering topics such as their main IoT goals; most pressing challenges and concerns in using IoT technologies; the applications and technologies being deployed; and the providers they are working with. Along with a snapshot of IoT deployment today, the survey also covers future intentions for investment, application adoption, and new technologies of interest.

First and foremost, IoT adoption rates are rising, but there is still plenty of room for further growth. Globally, 29% of organizations we initially approached to participate in the survey are actively deploying or using IoT solutions. This is considerably higher in some markets – China, notably, had 41% of respondent organizations reporting they were IoT adopters.

Second, the survey provides a view on which are the primary and most common IoT use cases being adopted. We see a high level of diversity in the "entry path" companies are taking in adopting IoT, and the majority of respondents are deploying more than one type of IoT application.

But as shown in Figure 1, when taken across all industry verticals, asset tracking and remote asset monitoring together are the primary or main IoT applications being deployed by over one-third of organizations that use IoT. Typically, these are relatively low bandwidth applications; they can be deployed using a number of different technologies and in many different vertical "skins," from livestock tracking and monitoring to air quality monitoring in a city, or machine monitoring in a factory. These are closely followed by connected security applications and worker/workplace safety applications, indicating high interest in these areas and a market that is becoming relatively more commercialized for entry-level devices and solutions.

Organizations have high hopes for IoT's positive impact on their businesses, with 49% of respondents indicating they are already seeing the benefits. Most use a mix of technologies for IoT deployments; 43% report using cellular M2M (2G, 3G, 4G), while another 23% are using NB-IoT or LTE-M (Cat-M).

The survey also indicates the ongoing dominance of cloud and enterprise IT providers in the IoT market, with communications service providers lagging well behind in terms of IoT customer contract ownership. This will be a challenge for CSPs looking ahead to opportunities in the 5G-for-enterprise space – and indicates that key partnerships are still needed to facilitate and maximize channels to the enterprise market.

The IoT Enterprise Insight Survey results will be presented and analyzed in a series of upcoming reports from Ovum's IoT team, starting in early November. In addition, a queryable Excel tool with the full survey data set will be available to Ovum customers. For more information, please contact us at askananalyst@ovum.com
