The optical component (OC) PON market will remain strong due to adoption of next-gen PON, including 10G GPON, 10G EPON, and WDM PON OLTs and ONTs.

  • This year's forecast includes WDM PON given deployment plans by several operators for its support of 5G wireless fronthaul.
  • Ovum is forecasting an aggressive adoption of next-gen PON OLT transceivers. As next-gen OC OLT transceiver prices decline, the cost of deploying a next-gen OLT transceiver is proportionately lower per G of bandwidth. Consequently, new FTTx network builds will likely use next-gen OLTs, and existing network builds will be upgraded over time to support growing residential bandwidth demand, along with nonresidential subscribers and applications.
  • By 2024, more than 50% of all ONT transceiver/BOSAs will be next-gen PON including WDM PON. This reflects demand for broadband in the home along with the use of PON for non-residential applications and customers, such as smart cities, enterprises, campuses, wireless backhaul, and wireless fronthaul.
