This is an update of the Oman market covering mobile, fixed broadband, TV, operator initiatives, consumer market trends, and regulation. It includes subscription and revenue forecasts for mobile and fixed broadband.

  • Oman had 6.51 million mobile subscriptions at end-4Q18, a decline from 6.94 million at end-4Q17. In 4Q18, Oman's cellular penetration was at 136.55%, the lowest of the GCC countries. Total mobile subscriptions in Oman are declining since 3Q17 due to new registration standards and macroeconomic conditions in the region.
  • Pay-TV has struggled to make an impact in Oman. Oman's multichannel-TV market is led by DTH, with a 78% market share at end-2018. IPTV potential is restricted by the low penetration of fixed broadband services. However, improved broadband infrastructure – while assisting the rollout of legitimate services – will create additional piracy problems.
  • Operators in Oman are gearing up for the commercial launch of 5G services in the region. Ovum expects that both Omantel and Ooredoo will launch 5G services in the region by 2020.
