10G PON is being deployed but next-gen PON after 10G will be divergent, encompassing NG-PON2, 100G EPON, and 100G GPON along with possible convergence of EPON and GPON at 100G.

  • 10G PON is happening as discussed by numerous operators and vendors at OFC. There is divergence around what's next as Verizon focuses on NG-PON2 while other vendors and operators are working on 100G standards with possible EPON/GPON convergence.
  • While complete convergence of EPON and GPON at 100G is unlikely, even partial convergence at the optical interface and/or PON MAC layers would help to lower development costs and thereby, lower overall solution costs.

Features and Benefits

  • Assesses the status of the 10G PON market and its ecosystem.
  • Evaluates what comes after 10G PON, with multiple choices including NG-PON2 and 100G PON - EPON, GPON, and possible convergence.
  • Analyzes the benefits to EPON and GPON convergence at 100G; even partial convergence would benefit the vendors and CSPs.

Key questions answered

  • Is 10G PON being deployed? Has it reached mass-market prices?
  • What comes after 10G PON? Is the market focusing on a single standard?
  • Will EPON and GPON convergence happen at 100G?
  • Who is pushing for 100G convergence and why?

Ovum view

  • Summary
  • 10G PON is here today, with low-cost price points
  • Divergence after 10G, namely NG-PON2 versus 100G
  • 100G partial convergence would be better than no convergence
