Next-gen coherent transmission, direct-detect data center interconnect (DCI), and integrated vs. disaggregated networking were major discussion topics at this year’s Optical Fiber Conference (OFC) held in Anaheim in late March.

  • Integration versus disaggregation: In theory, these two architectures are diametrically opposed, leading to much debate in the industry. However, there is no one-size-fits-all answer and plenty of room for innovation with both architectures.
  • DCI for 80km: Inphi made the biggest splash at OFC with its introduction of its ColorZ reference design, the industry’s first silicon photonics 100G PAM4 platform solution for 80km DWDM data center interconnect (DCI) in a QSFP-28 form factor.
  • Beyond 100G: Nokia was showing products using its new PSE2 coherent chipset. Infinera took the wraps off its next generation of PICs and coherent DSP. Development of next-gen coherent capacities beyond 100G shows no sign of slowing.
