This is an update on the Netherlands telecoms market, covering mobile, fixed broadband, TV, OTT video, operator initiatives, M&A, and regulation. It includes subscription, revenue, and technology forecasts for these services.

  • The Dutch telecoms market is one of the most advanced fixed broadband sectors in the world, and recent fiber deployments have stirred xDSL and cable competition across platforms. The mobile subscription count is forecast to grow around 5.4% between end-2018 and end-2023, while that of fixed broadband is forecast to grow 9.3%, and that of pay TV to grow by less than 1%.
  • T-Mobile completed the acquisition of Tele2 in January 2019. As a result, Deutsche Telekom now owns 75% of the new entity, and Tele2 owns 25%. Liberty Global and Vodafone completed the creation of their Dutch 50:50 joint venture in December 2016, and named it “VodafoneZiggo” (since January 2017).
  • Mobile service revenue has declined in the past two years, and is expected to stabilize from 2019. On the fixed side, broadband revenue grew around 2% last year, driven by NGN networks and multiplay services.
