Microsoft has announced that Intune, the company's mobile device management, mobile application management, and PC management solution, will now support Android for Work. With this announcement, Microsoft joins other established enterprise mobility vendors in partnering with Google to roll out Android for Work features.
Intune is an enterprise mobile management (EMM) solution. It is of growing interest to enterprises that are looking to better manage not only mobile devices and apps but also a broader end-user computing estate, including PCs, from a unified administrator console. Microsoft joining the Android for Work program is a positive move for organizations utilizing, or looking at adopting, Intune. The partnership will result in Intune offering capabilities that will help organizations not only empower employees in the use of mobile apps and devices but also overcome some of the security challenges in doing so because of Android's enterprise-grade security.
Originally introduced by Google in 2015, Android for Work provides organizations with the capability to isolate personal and work-related information and data at the operating system level. As Android for Work must be administered through an EMM solution, this enables administrators with the functionality to containerize apps, enabling them to delete only work data and apps when necessary, for example. Administrators can also set policies and undertake device management capabilities with the technology. By becoming a part of the Android for Work partner ecosystem, Microsoft Intune will join other established EMM solution providers in offering a broader set of management policies for Android devices, along with improved security features and app configuration capabilities.
