Mellanox Technologies last week introduced high-bandwidth networking gear that also has high flexibility and scalability so developers can create purpose-built solutions. Mellanox sees an approaching data storm where performance would benefit from real-time analysis like that developed in its equipment. Moreover, the solution includes features aimed at delivering a high-quality end-user experience.

Mellanox offers a compelling 100G Ethernet solution

At a spectacular event at the One World Observatory at One World Trade Center in New York City, Mellanox introduced its latest data center networking products. This was not a typical product announcement, as indicated by the venue and host, mentalist Lior Suchard, who helped reinforce the message to the attending Mellanox customers, employees, and media that high-bandwidth connectivity is critical to support the impending data avalanche.

Mellanox announced numerous “firsts,” demonstrating its strength as a vertically integrated equipment vendor, including the first Open Ethernet–based switch with a 100G maximum port data rate and a 25/50G network adapter. Here are some noteworthy elements of the offering:

  • The switch, called Spectrum, supports ports at 25G, 40G, 50G, and 100G. It is non-blocking and supports up to 6.4Tbps at full line speed. The switch is based on Open Ethernet, so the hardware can be disaggregated from the software.

  • The switch is based on Mellanox’s own 25G integrated circuit, the first on the market to Ovum’s knowledge.

  • The Ethernet network adapter, called ConnextX-4Lx, supports 25 and 50G. It supports connecting multiple compute and storage hosts to the same adapter.

  • Mellanox also introduced 100G transceivers based on silicon photonics that support distances up to 2km.

Mellanox sees its switches and adapters being used to upgrade installed networks from 10 and 40G to 25 and 100G without changing the installed fiber and connector infrastructure. Applications such as Big Data analytics and Internet of Things require high bandwidth, low latency, and architectures with high access between storage and compute. Mellanox has introduced a solution suited to meet these emerging needs.
