Introduction

A detailed update of the Indonesia TV market, encompassing free-to-air and pay TV across all TV technologies plus next-generation TV initiatives and OTT video. Includes TV ratings, revenue, market shares, programming, and advertising.

Highlights

  • Long-term DTH satellite provider and market leader, Indovision, has realized the limitations of its exclusive content business model and is now bundling its TV service with 4G mobile data services in partnership with XL Axiata. Pay-TV operators have been weathering a challenging economic environment through 2015 and 2016; falling local currency is impacting the cost of overseas content.
  • Pay TV and video play a significant role in market penetration strategies for new fiber broadband providers. In the pay-TV market, Netflix, Tribe, Hooq, iflix, CatchPlay, and Viu have joined domestic incumbents Genflix and UseeTV to offer local services in 2016, quadrupling the SVoD options for Indonesian consumers.
  • The anti-piracy body IIPA says that the piracy and enforcement situation in Indonesia remains difficult, and it moved Indonesia to its “watch list” for 2016. With regulations governing DTT remaining ambiguous, and with little clarity on when a refreshed broadcasting law will be passed, the governments 2018 target for completetion of analog-to-digital switchover is unlikely to be met.
