This is an update of the Ghanaian TV market, covering an overview of the market, pay-TV landscape, next generation TV & OTT, and TV advertising expenditure. It includes TV subscriptions and revenue forecast for the period 2016-21.

  • Ghana had 3.25 million TV households at the end of 2015. The number of pay-TV households at that time was 480,000, accounting for 15% of total TV households. The country’s pay-TV market, in terms of revenues, is dominated by DTH, which is provided by South African giant Multichoice, France-based Canal+ and MyTV Africa, a subsidiary of Dubai-based Strong Technologies.
  • Ghana’s digital terrestrial migration is ongoing and is being undertaken by K-NET, a Ghana-based technology firm. The government had set end-March 2016 as the new deadline for complete switchover, following the cancellation of an initial DTT-deployment agreement with Chinese company StarTimes.
  • The adoption of OTT and triple-play services in Ghana is expected to record good growth, supported by increased mobile and fixed broadband connectivity as well as demand for video-on-demand services by consumers. International subscription video-on-demand providers Netflix and ShowMax have already launched services in the country.
