Introduction

A detailed update of South Korea’s TV market, encompassing free-to-air and pay TV across all TV technologies, plus OTT video and regulation changes. Includes TV ratings, revenues, market shares, programming, and advertising.

Highlights

  • Pay-TV penetration in South Korea is mature, having reached 87%, one of the highest rates in the Asia-Pacific region. Pay-TV revenue grew 6.3% year on year to reach $2.3m in 2015, with IPTV accounting for 43% of the total.
  • The upgrade from analog to digital is progressing well, and Ovum forecasts that all homes will be digitized by end-2020. Analog terrestrial switch-off took place at end-2012 following several delays, but free-to-air DTT uptake has been limited because of the high prevalence of pay TV.
  • The three IPTV operators, KT, SK Telecom, and LG U+, are offering UHD content to their subscribers. KT had more than 170,000 UHD subscribers, while SK Telecom and LG U+ had 20,000 and 162,000 UHD subscribers, respectively, at end-June 2015.
