This is an update of Malaysia's telecoms market, covering fixed broadband and mobile market trends and regulation. It includes service provider performance, multiplay services and bundling, fixed broadband pricing, and operator initiatives.


  • 2016 marks the weakening of mobile service revenue. Maxis, DiGi, and Celcom, the big three players, saw consistent decline in mobile service revenue in the first three quarters of 2016 because of sustained competition, which resulted in weaker data monetization.
  • The big three players' growth prospects will be challenging given that there will be a five-way battle between them, U Mobile, and webe (Telekom Malaysia) in a saturated market, where mobile penetration is 142%.
  • The fixed broadband (FBB) market witnesses speed upgrade. As the fiber market is beginning to evolve in terms of download speeds, the tariffs have declined – higher speeds are now offered at same price points. This has translated into more users upgrading to high-speed fiber plans.
