In Japan, mobile competition is largely centered on LTE, and networks are becoming faster with the launch of LTE-Advanced (LTE-A). While Au smartphone penetration on KDDI’s network increased to 54%, with 4G LTE penetration at 50% at end-March 2015, there was a decline in smartphone shipments and sales.


  • Operators have launched next-generation voice and video-calling services to emphasize differentiation. In December 2014, KDDI introduced voice-over-LTE service Au VoLTE, with an increased range of VoLTE-enabled smartphone models. The operator also entered into a roaming agreement with LG U+ for VoLTE services.
  • The influence of MVNOs on the Japanese market has been growing, and the recently imposed SIM unlock requirements for operators have created a market for low-cost devices. KDDI launched UQ Mobile through its KVE business, to expand into the cost-conscious segment.
