Summary

Content delivery network (CDN) market leader Akamai has acquired Soha Systems, a provider of technology that secures access, without a virtual private network (VPN) link, to corporate applications when users are coming from the public Internet.

Soha strengthens Akamai’s offerings in the enterprise market

Requirements for access to corporate applications are growing increasingly complex, as employees work from multiple locations on and off the corporate network, partners need access to perform outsourced functions, and customer interactions move increasingly online instead of face-to-face.

Traditional approaches such as VPNs cannot meet all these demands. Designed for business-to-employee connectivity, they are challenged by business-to-business and defeated altogether by the business-to-consumer paradigm.

Soha was created to address this situation. It puts software called a Soha Cloudlet in the environment where the applications reside (either in the customer’s data center or in a hybrid cloud environment) to act as an access policy server, communicating with the Soha Cloud regarding who can access what. For identity management, Soha can work with Active Directory, LDAP, and IDaaS players such as Okta, Ping, or OneLogIn, as well all as offering its own directory service if the customer prefers. Currently on AWS, Soha Cloud could easily be replicated in Akamai’s own infrastructure.

Akamai made its name providing CDN services to media companies and other big enterprises, but it has moved well beyond that market, providing security services such as DDoS mitigation, web application firewall, and API security. The Soha acquisition further extends what Akamai has to offer to businesses with a much-needed service for secure remote connectivity.
