Mid-market customers have been moving to public cloud solutions over recent years because of the simplicity, flexibility, and convenience offered in terms of how to make IT services available to customers/users. However, providing a cloud-like service to customers/users is how EMC is positioning its new on-premise VxRail hyper-converged infrastructure appliances.

An on-premise solution delivering cloud-like services offers a viable alternative to the public cloud

In January 2016, VCE became the EMC Converged Platforms division, just before VCE announced its newest range of hyper-converged infrastructure solutions aimed at SMB and mid-market customers. The VxRail Appliance represents a shift in thinking by VCE about how all its product ranges are positioned. The Vblock Systems are designed to provide good TCO for organizations that utilize them efficiently and measure the value over a number of years, with five years considered the optimum. For the mid-market, this approach failed to meet the needs of the PAYG model offered by public cloud providers.

The VxRail Appliance comes in a range of configurable solutions in a 2U chassis with storage units at the front that are configured automatically by the VSAN technology, and four CPU and memory modules at the rear. The individual modules can be fitted with a range of CPU and memory offerings to meet specific workload requirements. The solution can be expanded from a single 2U appliance that supports 200 VMs to a maximum 16-node cluster that supports 3,200 VMs. The VxRail comes with VMware vSphere, vCenter, and Virtual SAN technologies pre-installed and licensed, and works with Microsoft System Center via an API. Ovum considers this approach, which provides a simple way to deploy cloud-like service on premise for mid-market customers, a valuable alternative to public cloud.
