At Engage 2014, BMC emerged from a self-imposed stealth mode, and this year at Engage 2015, it announced some key innovative new solutions that map to its Digital Enterprise Management strategy. BMC is known for its mainframe solutions and its Patrol ITSM product range, but is now repositioning itself as an independent management vendor that provides solutions for managing multi-modal IT in the digital enterprise.

Analytics is a key capability needed to manage the digital enterprise

One key question that the new BMC has recognized is that organizations operate a continuum of technology (Ovum calls this multi-modal IT) ranging from 30-year-old Cobol applications on the mainframe to new mobile applications delivered off-premise as SaaS. These organizations all need to operate at speed and agility to match the market, and this is often referred to as a digital enterprise.

Two of the most note-worthy announcements at BMC Engage 2015 concern the TrueSight brand, with TrueSight Pulse and TrueSight Intelligence. Ovum believes that TrueSight has a good reputation and brand equity in terms of being clear about its core values and capabilities. With TrueSight Intelligence, BMC is expanding its horizons and integrating IT and the business with analytics. For those of us old enough to remember, this is the same message as its business service management (BSM) ethos, which the market was not ready for when BMC introduced it 12 years ago. However, today the BSM ethos is more readily understood by CIOs, and combined with analytics, it delivers the BSM promise in an easier to digest manner.

TrueSight Pulse involves BMC extending to mid-market customers where it has traditionally had little traction. TrueSight Pulse is a SaaS Infrastructure monitoring solution that covers a wide range of different applications and provides near real-time monitoring capability. Targeted at mid-market organizations as well as DevOps teams in larger enterprises who need second-by-second visibility to support the real-time nature of the Digital Enterprise, Ovum believes that the pricing and ease of access will appeal to mid-market organizations and enterprise DevOps teams alike.
