Many of the telecom IT vendor announcements and briefings at this year’s Mobile World Congress focused on enhancing and streamlining “best of suite” offerings and making them more cloud-friendly. Operators are desperate to simplify and automate overly complex operations in order to support digital transformation, deliver faster, and prepare for the demands of next-generation network architectures – hence the focus on easy-to-deliver “best of suite” offerings.
Enhancing end-to-end offerings and “end-to-end lite”
A strong appetite for end-to-end BSS/OSS suites, coupled with vendor consolidation, continues to shift attention away from “best of breed” and towards “best of suite” offerings. This was apparent at MWC this year, where announcements included:
Redknee unveiling its Redknee Unified 2016 revenue management software solution, an update that includes BSS product catalog and order management capabilities stemming from the 2015 acquisition of Orga Systems. Redknee is now one of the larger ISVs and has to deliver a well-integrated product suite if it is to compete with the major network and IT vendors.
Amdocs’ enhancements to its Customer Experience Solutions (CES) 10 portfolio, the most relevant additions in this context being the Amdocs B2B modular suite and a CES packaged offering for multiplay. The latter is a streamlined prepackaged BSS/OSS, big data, and business process offering that supports the speedy launch of greenfield multiplay operations.
AsiaInfo’s strategic partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to deliver its pre-integrated Veris BSS suite in the public cloud.
Ericsson’s launch of its Revenue Manager 16, a cloud-ready, convergent, real-time charging and billing product targeted at digital service providers.
Comptel’s announcement of enhancements to its FlowOne fulfillment suite and a collaboration with Tech Mahindra on a future billing framework combining policy, charging, and data management components with analytics.

A well-integrated product suite is a valuable positioning tool for major vendors, hence all the activity at MWC. A recent Ovum report suggests vendors offering a BSS product suite are winning more revenue management contracts than "best of breed" product vendors. However, delivering a genuine single-platform approach is not easy – it requires plenty of pre-integration and standardization effort to produce a seamless, unified offering that is fast, flexible, and suitable for cloud delivery.
