Introduction

This research note highlights three key findings from the results of Ovum's IoT enterprise insight survey, which surveyed 480 enterprises in Australia, China, Japan, Malaysia, and South Korea who are deploying or in the process of rolling out IoT solutions. The full results are published separately in the IoT Enterprise Insight Survey: Asia-Pacific report.

Highlights

  • APAC enterprise IoT adopters are planning for growth; 28% will invest $1m+ in IoT in 2018, up from 11% in 2017. But IoT suppliers need to be realistic on the size of project opportunities in APAC. Go after the $0.25m to <$1m projects for quick wins, the ability to add more live deployments to your portfolio, and the potential to grow these into bigger projects.
  • Global cloud and IT vendors are emerging as leading IoT providers for APAC enterprises. Microsoft and AWS are holding APAC IoT customer mindshare, closely followed by IBM and Cisco. Other players who are less strongly positioned should consider establishing partnerships to go-to-market together.
  • Important attributes that APAC enterprises look for in IoT suppliers are best-in-class technology (and partners), ability to support/integrate multiple technologies, and strong connectivity/network reach. Japan and South Korea enterprises demand suppliers have best-in-class technology or can boast of partnerships to that effect. Meanwhile, IoT suppliers need to assure Chinese and Malaysian enterprises that they can support multiple IoT technologies, as well as having best-in-class technology.
