In 2H17, Ovum conducted a 14-country survey of 1,343 enterprises deploying or in the process of rolling out IoT solution to examine IoT deployment trends, drivers and challenges, use cases, investment, and technology and business choices. This report provides insights from 399 respondents surveyed in France, Germany, Italy, the UK, and Spain.


  • Key strategic IoT drivers for Europe enterprises are cost, competitiveness, and business processes-related; major challenges are data/network security, integration with ICT infrastructure, and ongoing costs.
  • Small-scale IoT projects (<500 devices/connections) currently account for half of Europe deployments, but two-thirds of enterprises have future plans for bigger projects.
  • Microsoft and Amazon Web Services are the top 2 IoT providers contracted with by enterprise IoT deployers in Europe, with Cisco and IBM behind, followed by HPE and SAP. Verizon and Orange are the only CSPs/telcos among the top 15.
