Introduction

Cloudera SDX (short for Shared Data Experience) is the governance and common services layer sitting between the storage layer and the workloads layer in the Cloudera stack.

Highlights

  • The SDX framework simplifies messaging and positioning for Cloudera, which previously relied on multiple product offerings for data governance.
  • SDX provides a more centralized approach to data governance, with a “single pane” view and centralized dashboards that provide visibility into data policy and security for data stored across various repositories in the virtual data lake era.
  • SDX is largely a repackaging of these existing open source and Cloudera proprietary components, with a significant differentiator: SDX, as a unified governance and security layer, is multi-cluster aware.

Features and Benefits

  • Assesses the high-level architecture of the Cloudera SDX governance and security framework.
  • Identifies new capabilities that SDX provides and that were not available in the previous ecosystem of products.
  • Identifies potential workload use cases for SDX's centralized governance capabilities.
  • Analyzes the potential benefits of a centralized, "single pane of glass" governance approach in the context of data protection regulations such as GDPR.
  • Identifies several of the open source and proprietary product components that the SDX framework seeks to unify and consolidate.

Key questions answered

  • How do SDX's governance capabilities differ from those that were previously available in the Cloudera ecosystem of open source and proprietary products?
  • How is Cloudera SDX packaged and purchased?
  • What does it mean to have multi-cluster-aware governance capabilities, and how does this help "un-silo" the governance process?
  • How do SDX's centralized governance capabilities help comply with data protection and privacy requirements, such as those under GDPR?
  • What types of data storage repositories are compatible with the Cloudera SDX framework?
