This is an update of Indonesia's telecoms market, covering mobile, fixed broadband, operator initiatives, consumer market trends, and regulation. It includes subscriptions and revenue forecasts for mobile and fixed broadband.

  • A benign competitive environment, growing mobile broadband (3G/4G) user base, and better service monetization by cellcos are constructive forces at play. WCDMA and LTE market share will overtake 2G in 2016. Indosat and XL agreed on 4G LTE network sharing to benefit from efficiencies that will boost LTE rollout speeds and help the operators reduce costs.
  • Telkom has been the largest investor in FTTx, covering 10 million homes at end-2015. Subscriptions to Subs for Telkom’s triple-play fiber service, IndiHome, reached 1.1 million within a year at end-2015. Six OTT players have joined two domestic incumbents, Genflix and UseeTV, with local services in 1H16, quadrupling the number of SVOD options for Indonesian consumers.
  • Telkomsel, Indosat lead topline growth. Thanks to regional cluster-based pricing initiatives, Telkomsel’s voice and SMS revenues both grew year-on-year – voice by 8.9% and SMS by 4.7% – as the operator gradually raised voice and SMS price points. Indosat benefitted from good monetization of data and a growing customer base as a result of improved network quality perception.
