At its annual InterConnect event in Las Vegas in March 2017, IBM doubled down on enterprise cloud; the future strength of IBM will rest on a cloud. In her keynote, CEO Ginni Rometty defined the tenets that IBM cloud is built around: "It's enterprise strong, data first, and cognitive ready." She believes those factors, combined with IBM's vertical solutions and expertise, will differentiate the company.

  • Public cloud services are increasingly commoditized offerings. IBM realizes that much of its cloud offerings fall under that description, which makes it difficult to compete against AWS and Azure.
  • AWS in the last 18 months has made numerous rounds of price cuts that have made the industry harder to compete in. That is why IBM is betting that Watson will give it a major competitive advantage.
  • Over the two days at InterConnect, there was a series of announcements about enhancements to IBM's Watson Cloud platform.
