This spreadsheet projects unit sales for eSIM-compatible smartphones, tablets, wearables, and other portable devices for the 2015–21 period. Forecasts are provided for major regional markets.

  • Ovum expects the eSIM market to grow from 4.4 million to 234 million device unit sales between 2016 and 2021. Tablets and wearables such as the iPad Pro and Samsung Galaxy Gear smart watches made up most of the sales of eSIM devices in 2016. Ovum expects this to change as soon as the first eSIM compatible smartphones are introduced in 2017.
  • Smartphones will contribute to nearly three-quarters of all eSIM device shipments by 2021. However, only 8% of smartphones sold globally in 2021 will be eSIM compatible. The sheer size of the smartphone market clearly creates the biggest opportunity for eSIM technology.
