Introduction

Egypt has one of the largest internet markets in Africa, mostly dominated by the mobile segment. However, there is significant scope for improvement, as overall internet penetration in the country still stands at just over 44% as of May 2018.

  • Unified licenses will intensify the broadband coverage in Egypt. The Egyptian government initially approved the unified telecoms licenses in late 2014, but their launch was delayed considerably because of failed negotiation on licensing terms and ongoing disputes over interconnection charges between operators.
  • The NTRA should issue a framework to regulate interconnection pricing in the country. The Egyptian telecoms market is affected by interconnection pricing issues arising from disputes among operators.
  • The government needs to take further steps to improve national broadband coverage. In 2011, the government announced the "eMisr National Broadband Plan."
