On February 14, 2019, DriveNets, a startup, announced $110m of round A funding for a disruptive service provider routing solution with a cloud-native software package running on partners' white-box hardware. A North American tier 1 service provider has already deployed DriveNets' solution in its production network.
DriveNets has successfully made a container-based router solution that can support resilient service provider routing applications on strong white-box hardware based on merchant silicon network processors. DriveNets' solution decouples network growth from network cost, providing up to 50% savings compared with legacy router solutions by being able to utilize commercial hardware and containerized router application software with cloud flexibility.
DriveNets has built domain orchestrator and service provider router software with web-scale agility and telco-grade resiliency. Its scaled-out platform architecture is based on an ecosystem of distributors and white-box manufacturers that deliver their solution directly to communications service providers (CSPs), while DriveNets sells its Network Cloud Software.
The network cloud architecture creates software-centric routing infrastructure that can grow linearly to a large scale and run any service on any port from a centralized cloud. Its architecture is based on a cloud-based network control plane, network line-card units, and network fabric units, which construct a dynamic routing platform that can scale from as small as 40×100G ports to 1920×400G ports per routing node with only two building blocks, lowering the capex, opex, and maintenance costs significantly. The cloud-based control plane and hardware can support all large-scale services that service providers expect, such as Layer 2 VPN, Layer 3 VPN, BGP, Internet access, peering, and core routing.
As carriers try to solve the challenge of consumer, business, and wireless bandwidth growth with limited revenue growth, DriveNets is lowering carrier investment requirements, while simplifying network operations with automation and zero-touch provisioning capabilities.

The first standards-based 5G networks have gone live with commercial service offerings. The reviews, however, have been less than flattering. A web search of reviews shows such common themes as patchy coverage, speeds are fast but not 10 times faster than LTE, the device has a hard time holding onto the 5G signal, and few devices are available.
