Total communications industry capex increased to $466bn, driven by steady growth of fixed and mobile telecom operators along with rapid growth shown by internet content providers (ICPs).


  • Demand for high-speed broadband (both wireless and fixed) led to the 4.7% growth in mobile CSP revenues and 1.5% growth in fixed CSP revenues. Increase in cloud migration, e-commerce, and OTT services led to the 16% growth in ICP revenues.
  • Mobile capex for rolling 12 months increased 23% YoY as 5G-related initiatives gained momentum. Fixed CSP capex remained flat in 2Q18. ICP capex for rolling 12 months jumped by 37% in 2Q18.
  • CP capital intensity increased after two years of continuous decline. Capital intensity reached 14.6% as all CP segments witnessed capex growth. Capital intensity of both fixed and mobile is converging at 19% as mobile capex growth outpaces growth in revenues.
