Ovum view

The challenge faced by many IT departments in enterprise organizations is one of too many management tools from too many different vendors. These tools are siloed and do not promote the changes needed if IT management or integrate with existing processes to operate optimally in cloud environments.

Process integration is at the heart of CLM v4.5

The ability to reduce the impact of virtualization and cloud technologies on the organization requires that the implementation and management of these technologies can fit with existing organizational structures and process. While Ovum expects the structure to change over time, initially the existing structures will be retained while more appropriate ones are defined and implemented in an emergent style. The approach from BMC to cloud computing addresses the need to integrate, yet be flexible to change, in three ways.

First, it provides a one-stop shop for everything-as-a-service through BMC’s MyIT portal solution. This approach focuses on the user experience and drives digital service innovation in organizations by providing the tools needed to the people who need them. Second, the ability to integrate with existing management tools used in the operations team means that no disruption to other IT departmental processes is encountered. This approach to process integration demonstrates an ability to become the trusted compliance partner in any move to cloud computing. Finally, BMC has designed CLM to simplify the complexity of implementing and managing disparate cloud services, and this is demonstrated through the integration with CloudFoundry.

While none of these capabilities is particularly new in scope, what Ovum does like is the heterogeneity of BMC’s solution, which makes it a pragmatic solution for CIOs. Effectively, BMC CLM enables the automation of a significant part of any organization’s cloud strategy, and enabling this to fit in with existing processes and structures is a large part of delivering on that cloud strategy.
