An update on Bharti Airtel's telecoms operations, covering financial performance, market dynamics, key developments, and strategy, as well as the operator's latest product and service launches.

  • For the year ended December 2018, Bharti Group's consolidated revenue was INR806.5bn, a year-on-year (YoY) decline of 6.2%. The decline was largely driven by Bharti's performance in its home market of India.
  • Bharti's total India revenue from consumer mobile services declined by over 15% YoY in 2018. While ARPU continued to slide during the first half, there were some signs of ARPU stabilizing and climbing up during the second half. Bharti took significant measures to improve its service ARPU through introduction of minimum ARPU plans. The operator also achieved price increases with its entry-level unlimited calling service plans in December.
  • Profit has been hit hard by competition in its home market, where Bharti reported a net loss (before exceptional items) of INR29.3bn for 2018. The group's net income therefore shrank to INR3.8bn in 2018, only a quarter of its 2017 profit of INR13.9bn.
