Many carriers have made the case for a transformation to a software-centric model for network services. AT&T put a stake in the ground, announcing its vision early in 2013, and started on a massive campaign that spread across the entire company. In this report, Ovum examines some of the major elements of the software-centric transformation of its network, including its investment and leadership in many open source initiatives.

  • Enhanced Control, Orchestration, Management, and Policy (ECOMP) is just one example of a network architecture and management model to support new services in this software-centric world.
  • ECOMP is a management platform model created by AT&T, making the company one of the first carriers and a leader in making this transformation. AT&T provided early examples for many others to follow or, at a minimum, use for comparison or benchmarking.
  • Other carriers may take different paths and will make different network architecture decisions or implement other software development methodologies, but AT&T created and shared the elements of its network architecture, software development model, and open source activities as a benchmark for comparison and reference.
