Telenor has awarded a second contract to Beijing-based vendor AsiaInfo, this time for the operator’s Hungarian Network. This follows Telenor’s 2013 contract with AsiaInfo to supply cloud-based BSS infrastructure to its Danish operating company. AsiaInfo has also announced the opening of a Nearshore Delivery Center (NDC) to service the contract and support other wins that the company is expecting to make in the region.

AsiaInfo expands further into Europe as Telenor adopts cloud-based BSS

AsiaInfo’s announcement this week shows that the company is gaining ground in the European market for BSS, due to the breadth of its portfolio and the experience it has gained over the last few years in China. Indeed, the vendor has been providing real-time BSS infrastructure in China to regional telcos, some of which have more subscribers than several European countries put together. This means that although the company is still a relative newcomer to the European market, it can compete on level terms with most of the established BSS vendors in terms of both experience and product maturity. AsiaInfo’s growing confidence is evidenced by its expectation that its NDC will "definitely [support] some new operators as well as some more potential opportunities with Telenor."

Although both AsiaInfo and Telenor have not divulged technical details of the Hungarian contract, it is likely an extension of the cloud-based BSS infrastructure implemented for Telenor Denmark. Under the terms of the first contract, AsiaInfo provided its proprietary cloud-based BSS platform, consisting of billing, CRM, real-time charging, and analytic solutions. The vendor also consolidated Telenor Denmark’s 100 plus legacy systems into a single billing platform. The multi-tenancy and cloud hosting capabilities of AsiaInfo’s Veris BSS portfolio make it very likely that Telenor is now engaged in extending the solution to its other operating companies with the intention of running its many European operating companies from a single, centralized IT platform. Cloud-based BSS has received much interest during the last three to four years, but if Telenor extends the platform to all its other territories, it will be something of a milestone for the industry and an excellent showcase for the capabilities of cloud-based IT infrastructure.
