Introduction

This forecast covers app downloads and revenue – both app-store-transacted end-user-spend revenue and in-app ad revenue. Downloads and revenue are split by ecosystem (Apple App Store, Google Play, Others) and by app type (gaming apps vs. nongaming apps).

Highlights

  • Global app revenue – derived from both app-store-transacted end-user-spend revenue and in-app advertising revenue – is set to grow by 57% over the next five years, from $201bn in 2019 to $316bn in 2024, even though downloads are set to grow by only 18.6%.
  • In-app ad revenue will fail to keep pace with end-user-spend revenue and will no longer be the main source of app revenue as of 2020, because a growing number of e-commerce retailers are moving away from app-store-published native apps to browser-based progressive web apps.
  • Apple App Store's end-user spend revenue will continue to overshadow Google Play's throughout the forecast period. On the in-app-ad revenue front, the gap is less stark, though Google's ecosystem will have nearly caught up with Apple's by the end of the forecast period.

Features and Benefits

  • Find out which app ecosystems will be generating the most revenue and downloads over the next five years.
  • Find out how the revenue split between end-user spend and in-app advertising has evolved over time and how it will evolve in future.
