The announcement at Dreamforce 2015 of Thunder, a new Internet of Things (IoT) platform service, and its ancillary IoT Cloud was a positive development. There has been talk of a Salesforce IoT platform like Thunder for about three years and the time has come for the company to deliver something substantial.

  • Thunder extends applications and creates independent productized SaaS IoT applications, but to start with, application IoT enablement is the top use case. It is the IoT alter ego of Wave, which focuses on adding analytics capabilities to Salesforce's Sales and Service Cloud offerings.
  • It has taken Salesforce only a year to create Thunder because, to do so, the company has leveraged a variety of resources. Heroku provides the infrastructure and Lightning provides the user interface. Four Apache Foundation open source projects provide a lot of the underlying technology.
