Introduction

This report identifies and analyzes the alternative strategies and technologies being deployed by network operators and service providers to provide internet connectivity in the rural and remote areas of sub-Saharan Africa.

Highlights

  • Despite the relatively high mobile penetration rates in Africa, broadband penetration remains low, particularly in rural and remote areas.

  • Rural regions in Africa are characterized by vast unconnected areas with sparse populations, underdeveloped basic infrastructure, and relatively low income levels, which discourage service providers from investing in broadband networks.

  • There is growing demand for broadband services in rural areas of Africa, creating opportunities for service providers. However, the broadband requirements of rural users are different than those in urban areas. Use of alternative technologies will play an important role in bridging the connectivity gap in the rural and underserved areas of Africa.
