Introduction

The case for edge computing has strengthened since Ovum last looked at the technology, mainly driven by 5G. But how and where in the network will the edge be deployed and who will own it are questions still to be answered.

Highlights

  • Interest in building edge networks is extending into the wider industry, and CSPs won't necessarily be the ones to build, or even own, the edge network.
  • There are still no signs that the industry is coalescing around a single approach to edge computing. Despite efforts to standardize on a single edge computing architecture, industry bodies and CSPs are exploring a range of models that are not necessarily compatible.

Features and Benefits

  • Explore the technical, practical and business challenges of providing low-latency, on-demand, and optimized services at the network edge.
  • Understand how work on edge computing is progressing, who is trialling it, and which industry initiatives and standards bodies are helping to define the ecosystem.

Key questions answered

  • How has interest in edge computing grown and developed over the last two years?
  • What are the major telecoms equipment providers’ strategies for edge computing?
