This report analyzes the consumer pricing models of the first 5G launches. Six early pricing models emerged. Most operators chose "do nothing" (offer existing plans to those with a 5G smartphone), whilst other common pricing models are speed tiers, charging an incremental fee, and "differentiate."

  • Some operators brought 5G to market with no premium, while the pricing by speed tiers, incremental fee, and hybrid (a combination of two models) generated the highest premiums. But it is still too early to pick one strategy at the best way to monetize 5G, in part because other pricing methods are evolving.

Features and Benefits

  • The research identifies the emergence of six 5G pricing models for consumers, and evaluates the pros and cons of each.
  • Assists those operators that have not yet commercialized 5G to ascertain how best to charge consumers and addresses what new services are being offered to drive upsell.

Key questions answered

  • How are operators charging for 5G – is it more of the same, or have new pricing models emerged?
  • What are the South Korean operators doing that no other operators are; and what does their early ARPU story show?
